Delhi: Court on Tuesday sent SDPI national president MK Faizi to six-day Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody in an alleged money laundering case linked to banned outfit Popular Front of India (PFI)

A Delhi court on Tuesday sent SDPI national president MK Faizi to six-day Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody in an alleged money laundering case linked to banned outfit Popular Front of India (PFI). Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jeet Singh remanded Faizi to custody on ED’s plea seeking his interrogation to unearth the money trail and conspiracy in the case.

The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), founded in 2009 and headquartered in Delhi, is alleged to be a political front of the PFI. The ED, in its application seeking 10-day custody, alleged that Faizi was absconding.

Arrested from International Airport
The accused opposed the application, saying the money was transferred even before PFI was declared illegal. The defence counsel asked how the accused knew that the government was going to declare it illegal so that transactions could be stopped. According to sources, Faizi was arrested on the night of March 3 from Delhi’s International Airport under the Anti Money Laundering Act.

What is Popular Front of India?

Popular Front of India started in Kerala in 2006. PFI came into existence after the merger of 3 Muslim organizations. These 3 organizations were Rashtriya Vikas Morcha, Karnataka Forum for Dignity and Manitha Neeti Pasari of Tamil Nadu. After the demolition of Babri Masjid, many such organizations came up in the South, some of which were merged to form PFI.

The government had imposed a ban in 2022
The central government had banned it on 28 September 2022. ED has been investigating several cases against PFI since then. Before the ban on PFI, this organization used to get a large amount of financial help from the countries of the Middle East. This organization was mainly formed to unite Muslims. The headquarters of PFI was earlier in Kozhikode but due to continuous expansion, the central office was also opened in Delhi.
