Delhi’s Power Minister Ashish Sood administered the oath of office and secrecy to him at the Delhi Secretariat today. Delhi’s Chief Secretary, Power Secretary and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
At the swearing-in ceremony, Power Minister Ashish Sood congratulated Justice Umesh Kumar for the new responsibility and expressed hope to further strengthen Delhi’s power sector under his leadership.
He said that the demand for electricity is going to increase in the summer season, so there is a need to be especially vigilant. Apart from this, he emphasized on maintaining better coordination with Delhi’s power distribution companies (DISCOMs) so that the people of the capital can get uninterrupted and affordable electricity.
Introduction of Justice Umesh Kumar
Justice Umesh Kumar is a former judge of the Allahabad High Court and will now serve as the Chairman of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). This commission is an independent regulatory body of Delhi’s power sector, which works to fix electricity rates, control the functioning of power companies and promote competition in the market.
Electricity consumers will benefit
On this occasion, Minister Ashish Sood said that this new appointment of DERC will prove to be in the interest of Delhi’s electricity consumers. He hoped that under the leadership of Justice Umesh Kumar, there will be a better solution to the problems related to power supply and consumers will get better services.
Challenges of power sector in Delhi
It is worth noting that Delhi’s power sector is facing many challenges. The problem of power cuts and overloading becomes common during summer. Apart from this, disputes have also arisen from time to time regarding electricity rates, subsidy and functioning of distribution companies. The main job of DERC is to maintain a balance between power companies and consumers.
Now consumer interests will get a boost
Experts believe that the appointment of an experienced Justice in DERC will increase transparency and accountability in the power sector. Now it remains to be seen what new initiative the commission under the chairmanship of Justice Umesh Kumar takes for the electricity consumers of Delhi.
