Delhi: Delhi government minister Atishi has appealed to the Haryana government to release additional water in Yamuna on humanitarian grounds as Delhi is facing water shortage.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and minister Atishi said on Saturday that in view of the water shortage in the national capital, the Delhi government has requested Haryana to release additional water in the Yamuna on humanitarian grounds. The Delhi Water Minister said in a press conference that due to lack of water in the Munak Canal and Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant, the national capital is facing a shortage of 70 million gallons per day (MGD) in producing treated water. She said that normally the production of (treated) water in Delhi is around 1,002 MGD, which decreased to 932 MGD on Friday.

Delhi government appeals to release water from Haryana
The minister said, “The Delhi government has appealed to Haryana to release additional water for the people of the national capital on humanitarian grounds.” She said that issues related to the sharing of Yamuna water can be discussed after the heat subsides. She said that no solution to the water crisis in Delhi could be found in the meeting of the Upper Yamuna River Board on Friday. He claimed that Himachal Pradesh is ready to give the water not used by it to Delhi. The minister said, “I spoke to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu over the phone and he has assured me of cooperation.”

Atishi said – the number of tankers should be increased

Atishi said that the availability of water from Himachal Pradesh has not been assessed by the board yet. He said that in a meeting with the officials of Delhi Jal Board on Saturday, it was decided that the areas where water is not being supplied should be identified and the number of water tankers should be increased. Let us tell you that a letter was also written to the governments of UP and Haryana by the Delhi government recently. In this letter, Delhi’s Water Minister Atishi wrote that the people of Delhi are eagerly waiting for your reply.
