The Delhi High Court on Wednesday said dogs are good friends of humans and should be treated well. It also asked the authorities to ensure that dog-human conflict is reduced in the capital. Justice Mini Pushkarna directed the authorities and other concerned parties to give recommendations regarding the rehabilitation of stray dogs. The court said, “Dogs are the most adorable animals in the world and the best friends of humans. It should be ensured that dogs are protected and treated well.”

Sterilization of dogs is not effective at all: Delhi High Court

On being told that sterilization of about 70 per cent of the dogs would solve the problem, the judge said that the proposed solution had been going on for the last three decades, but there was no change. The court said, “Sterilization is not effective at all. It is not a solution.” It was also brought to the notice of the court that about 200 dogs, which were earlier sent to a shelter home, are now going to be left on the road as that temporary shelter home is to be demolished by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

What did the court say?
The court said that only the proposal of sterilisation of dogs came up in the meeting held by the Chief Secretary of Delhi. The court said that various animal birth control centres are not functioning and 78 veterinary hospitals are closed. The court scheduled the next hearing of the case for September 17. Earlier, the High Court had asked the capital authorities to formulate a policy for rehabilitation of stray dogs at the institutional level so that they can be removed from the streets and lanes in a phased manner.
