Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line, from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden, has successfully achieved the goal of unattended train operations (UTO). This means that metro trains are running on the Magenta Line without drivers. This is an important milestone in DMRC’s automation. The entire fleet of trains on this line is now driverless and train operators have been completely removed.
The Delhi Metro has also started implementing UTO on the Pink Line from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar. An official of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said, “Delhi Metro started unattended train operations in 2020. The change to UTO was done stepwise, which was approved by the Metro Rail Safety Commissioner.”
Driverless trains on the Magenta Line
The first phase, which began in May 2024, included the removal of the cabin’s dividing gate and the gradual removal of the driving console, while the train operator remained present in the cab, according to a TOI report. By August 2024, the second phase allowed the train operator to be present anywhere inside the train.
In the third phase (A), implemented the same month, the presence of train operators was restricted to every second train. “This resulted in the completion of the final Phase IIIB in May 2025, when train operators were completely removed, marking the beginning of fully driverless operations on this line,” the official said.
Metro trains will also be driverless on the Pink Line
For the Pink Line, the automation process began in March 2025. Giving information, an official said, “The Pink Line will reach the second phase by June 2025 and is expected to become completely driverless in the next three to four months.” With the implementation of UTO on both the lines, Delhi Metro will be one of the largest driverless metro networks in the world, with 97 km of fully automated corridors out of the total 395 km network in Delhi-NCR.
Promise of seamless and reliable travel experience
An official said, “This change represents a significant leap in urban mobility as it ensures advanced and safe services and reduces manual intervention. Driverless trains not only increase operational efficiency but also promise a seamless and reliable travel experience for passengers.”
Even in the three priority corridors of the fourth phase expansion of DMRC, train operations will be driverless. Work is underway on all three corridors—RK Ashram Marg-Janakpuri West (extension of the Magenta Line), Aerocity-Tughlakabad (new Golden Line) and Majlis Park-Maujpur (extension of the Pink Line).
