Delhi: Patiala House Court has reserved its decision on the plea seeking interim bail of jailed Jammu and Kashmir MP Engineer Rashid to attend the Parliament session and will pronounce the verdict on March 7.

Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Wednesday reserved the decision on the petition seeking interim bail for jailed Jammu and Kashmir MP Engineer Rashid to participate in the Parliament session. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jeet Singh has ordered to pronounce the decision on the bail petition on March 7 (Friday). Earlier, the court had issued a notice to the NIA on March 3 and sought a reply on the petition.

Judge Chander Jeet Singh heard the arguments on the petition. Advocate Vikhyat Oberoi had filed a petition on behalf of MP Engineer Rashid on February 27. In which he has requested to give relief to Rashid on the ground that he is an MP and it is necessary to participate in the Parliament session to fulfill his responsibility towards the people who have elected him. The petition said that the second phase of the budget session of Parliament is starting from March 10, which will end on April 4.

Rashid’s regular bail plea pending in court

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had allowed Engineer Rashid to be released on custody parole for two days to participate in the Parliament session. Rashid withdrew the bail plea filed in the High Court on 24 February. The High Court had directed the Special NIA Court of Patiala House Court to hear and decide on Rashid’s bail plea as soon as possible. Rashid’s regular bail plea is currently pending in the court.

Defeated Omar Abdullah in Lok Sabha elections

Sheikh Abdul Rashid is known as Engineer Rashid. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Baramulla seat. He defeated National Conference candidate and current Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The court had granted interim bail to Rashid for election campaign on 10 September 10.

Engineer Rashid is lodged in Tihar Jail since 2019

NIA had arrested Rashid in the terror funding case, he is lodged in Tihar Jail, Delhi since 2019. His name cropped up during the investigation against Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested by the NIA for allegedly funding terrorist groups and separatists in the Kashmir Valley. In this case, the NIA has filed a chargesheet against several people including separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.
