Delhi Police busted a fake call center and arrested 18 accused, who were duping unemployed youths of huge amounts of money by promising them jobs

The Delhi Police has busted a fake call centre which preyed on job seekers by posing as HR representatives of reputed banks and companies. An official gave this information on Tuesday. Police said that during this operation, 18 people involved in the fraud have been arrested.

This is how the case came to light

The police said that the investigation of the entire episode started on January 30, when a victim lodged an online complaint through the NCRP portal. The complainant was looking for a job, he had uploaded his CV on several job portals.

Asked to take online test

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer Delhi) said in a statement, ‘The complainant received a call on January 25 from a person who introduced himself as a representative of a renowned bank. The caller asked him to take an online test, which he could not complete. After this, he was advised to visit a website and take online courses, which were said to be necessary to get a job.

Fake call center fraudsters accessed bank details
According to the statement, believing the caller, the complainant had further conversation through another phone number provided by the fraudsters. The complainant was misled into believing that this was a legitimate employment opportunity and was asked to pay course or training fees. The fraudsters also gained access to his bank details, which led to legal action.

Police formed a special team
Police said a special team was formed to nab the criminals. Through analysis of call records, IMEI tracking and email-linked accounts, the police traced the main suspects. According to the statement, two main accused Gaurav Dargan (46) and Piyush Malhotra (40) were arrested in a raid in Janakpuri on March 7.

People were lured by making false promises
The DCP said that interrogation of the accused revealed a fake call center operating near Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri. He said, ‘Acting on this information, the team raided the spot and arrested 16 more suspects including two women. The gang used to dupe job seekers by posing as HR professionals of legitimate companies. The victims were lured by making false promises of jobs and forced to pay fees for registration and training. However, no real job was offered and their money was grabbed.’

A large number of mobiles, laptops and desktops also recovered
Along with this, the police have seized eight mobile phones including SIM cards, eight laptops, one Apple desktop, five routers, two CPUs and two monitors during the raid.
