Dhaka: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is on a visit to Bangladesh. This is the first high-level visit from India after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in August. Immediately after reaching Dhaka, Misri held a meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohammad Jashimuddin. Misri has also met Bangladesh’s Foreign Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hussain. Vikram Misri’s visit to Bangladesh is considered very important.
‘Attacks on religious places will not be tolerated’
After meeting Bangladesh’s Foreign Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hussain, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed hope for improvement in relations between the two countries. He said, “We also discussed recent developments. I made him aware of the concerns related to the safety and welfare of minorities. We have also discussed the incidents of regrettable attacks on cultural and religious properties. Attacks on religious places and Hindus are regrettable, these are not tolerated at all.” India made its stand clear
After meeting Bangladesh’s Foreign Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hussain, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, “Today’s discussions have given both of us an opportunity to take stock of (India-Bangladesh) relations. I appreciate the frank and constructive discussions with all my interlocutors. India wants a positive, constructive and mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh.”
Will meet Mohammad Yunus
Misri’s visit comes amid growing tensions in relations between New Delhi and Dhaka over attacks on minorities including Hindus in Bangladesh after Hasina’s ouster from power. He is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Bangladesh’s interim government chief Mohammad Yunus. It is believed that he will raise India’s concerns about attacks on Hindus with Dhaka.
India-Bangladesh relations are tense
It is worth noting that in August this year, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave the country due to massive anti-government protests. Yunus took over the reins of the interim government a few days after Hasina took refuge in India. Relations between India and Bangladesh have become strained after the developments in the neighboring country. Relations between the two countries have become even more strained after attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Hindu saint Chinmay Krishna Das. In the past few weeks, there have been incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities in the neighboring country as well as attacks on temples, over which India has expressed deep concern.
