Dhaka: Hindu saint Chinmay Krishna Das could not get any relief from the Bangladesh court on Tuesday due to no lawyer being available to represent him and the hearing on his bail plea was postponed for a month. This information has been received from media reports. ‘BDNews24.com’ quoted Chittagong Metropolitan Police ADC (Prosecution) Mofizur Rahman as saying that after the preliminary hearing on the bail plea on Tuesday, the judge fixed January 2 as the date for the next hearing. Now it will be known only after a month whether Das will get bail in the sedition case registered against him or not.
No lawyer appeared on behalf of Chinmay
The report said that Chinmay Krishna Das’ bail plea was to be heard in the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Saifullah Islam on Tuesday, but no lawyer appeared on behalf of Chinmay. In view of the hearing on the bail plea, tight security arrangements were made in the Chittagong court premises and security officials of various forces were deployed in large numbers. Das was not brought to the court for hearing.
Arrested from Dhaka airport
Das, spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jot, was arrested on November 25 from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on charges of sedition. A Chittagong court refused to grant him bail on November 26 and sent him to jail, following which his supporters protested. After his arrest, a lawyer was killed in the violence that broke out in Bangladesh’s southeastern port city of Chittagong. After Das was denied bail, his lawyers immediately filed a review petition, demanding a rehearing but no hearing took place that day.
Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh
Since the resignation of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August this year and the coming to power of the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, relations between India and Bangladesh have been tense. India has expressed concern over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. There has been a recent increase in violent attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh.
