Doctor’s Strike on 17 Aug: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced on Thursday (August 15) night that nationwide health services will be closed for 24 hours on August 17. The IMA says that doctors are going to go on strike on August 17 in protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and then the treatment meted out to the protesting doctors on the eve of Independence Day. Its effect is going to be seen on medical services.
In a statement issued by the IMA, it has been said that doctors of modern medicine are not going to provide their services from 6 am on August 17 to 6 am on August 18. During this time, only essential services are going to be provided to the patients. There is a lot of anger among the people about the rape-murder case in Kolkata Medical College. At this time, tremendous protests have been seen in the capital of West Bengal. A large number of women have taken to the streets and have demanded justice for the victim.
What has the IMA said?
According to news agency ANI, IMA has issued a press release. It said, “The Indian Medical Association announces a 24-hour strike by doctors of modern medicine from 6 am on Saturday, August 17 to 6 am on Sunday, August 18, in view of the brutal crime and hooliganism against protesting students on the eve of Independence Day at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.”
The IMA further said, “All essential services will continue. Casualties will be treated. Regular OPDs will not function and elective surgeries will not be performed. This strike applies to all areas where modern medicine doctors are providing services. IMA needs the sympathy of the country on the issue of doctors.”
12 people arrested in Kolkata rape case
The body of a female trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The woman was raped and then brutally murdered. In this entire case, a civic volunteer was arrested the very next day. The responsibility of investigating the case has been handed over to the CBI, which called five doctors for questioning on Thursday. So far 12 people have been arrested in the rape-murder case.
