Santo Domingo: At least 66 people were killed when the roof of a nightclub collapsed in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Caribbean country Dominican Republic, on Tuesday morning. According to reports, more than 160 people were also injured in this incident. Giving information about the incident, officials said that people are being searched under the rubble in the Jet Set nightclub. Emergency Operation Center Director Juan Manuel Mendez said, ‘We estimate that many people buried under the rubble are still alive and the authorities will not give up until every person is taken out.’
Merengue singer Rabi Perez also injured in the accident
Mendez said that among the injured was merengue singer Rabi Perez, who was performing in the nightclub when the roof collapsed. His manager Enrique Paulino, whose shirt was soaked in blood, told the media present at the scene that the concert started shortly before midnight, and about an hour later the roof collapsed. He told that the saxophonist of the group died in this incident. The manager said, ‘It happened very quickly. I somehow managed to reach the corner myself.’ Paulino further said that he initially thought it was an earthquake.
President Luis Abinader reached the spot
President Luis Abinader posted on ‘X’ that all rescue agencies are working ‘tirelessly’ to help the affected people. He wrote, ‘We are very sad about the incident that happened at the Jet Set Nightclub. Since the accident, we are taking information related to it minute by minute.’ Abinader also reached the accident site and hugged the people searching for their loved ones there. However, he avoided answering questions from the media. The reason behind the collapse of the roof of the nightclub is not yet known.
