Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump has claimed that the US is giving subsidies of $100 billion and $300 billion to its two neighbouring countries Canada and Mexico. He said that if this is so, then both these countries should become part of America. Trump (78) has threatened that if Canada and Mexico do not stop the flow of illegal immigrants from their respective territories to the US, then he will impose heavy tariffs on both the countries.
‘Why are we giving subsidies’
In an interview to NBC News, Trump said, “We are giving subsidies of more than US $ 100 billion every year to Canada. We are giving subsidies of about US $ 300 billion to Mexico. We should not give subsidies. Why are we giving subsidies to these countries? If we are giving them subsidies, then they should become a state (of America).”
‘It will not affect Americans’
Trump refuted the comments of some US CEOs that the tariffs will harm the US and the prices of common goods will increase, which will increase the pressure on the common people. He said, “It will not make any difference to the Americans. They built a great economy for us. If we have to face problems related to tariffs along with war and other things, then I would like to answer the war with tariffs (taxes). I would say that if you guys want to fight, then it is good, you fight. But, both of you will pay 100 percent duty to America. If used properly, tariffs have many purposes. I do not say that you use them like crazy. I say use them properly. ”
‘The country will not be harmed’
Trump said, “This will not harm the country, rather it will give money to this country. We never got a chance to work at full strength because we fought the Kovid-19 epidemic before this. We dealt with it very well, successfully. When I handed over the reins of power to Joe Biden (outgoing President), the stock market was higher than just before the Kovid-19 epidemic came. Tariffs (taxes), if used properly, are a very powerful tool not only economically, but also for achieving other things outside of economics.”
‘Talked to the leaders of Canada and Mexico’
During the interview, Trump was asked, “Are you going to impose these duties or is this just a negotiating strategy?” Trump said, “Let me give you an example. Millions of people are coming to our country from Canada and especially Mexico. I spoke to both (leaders of Canada and Mexico). I spoke to Justin Trudeau. He left for ‘Mar-a-Lago’ (private club owned by Trump) within about 15 seconds of talking on the phone. He was at Mar-a-Lago. We were having dinner and talking about this.” Trump said, “I told the President of Mexico and Justin Trudeau, if this does not stop, I will impose about 25 percent duty on your country.”
