US President Donald Trump has banned people from 12 countries from entering the US. People from these countries cannot travel to the US. Even during his first term as US President, Trump had imposed a travel ban on people from many countries. However, it was later lifted. Now once again Trump has imposed a complete ban on people from many countries entering the US. Trump has taken strict action against seven other countries, citing the security of America.
The ban will come into effect from Monday
Trump has banned people from a dozen countries from entering the United States by signing a proclamation on Wednesday night. These countries include Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Along with this, it has been decided to impose strict restrictions on people coming from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. The travel ban will come into effect from 12 noon on Monday.
What did Donald Trump say?
Donald Trump said in his announcement, “I must act to protect the national security and national interests of the United States and its people.” Trump had given an executive order on January 20, asking the State and Homeland Security departments and the Director of National Intelligence to prepare a report on “hostile attitudes” towards the US and to find out whether people coming from certain countries pose a risk to national security. After this report, a complete ban has been imposed on 12 countries and strict rules have been imposed on 7 countries.
Ban was also imposed in 2017
During his first term, Trump had issued an executive order in January 2017, banning travel to the US by citizens of seven Muslim countries – Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. It was one of the most chaotic and confusing decisions of his presidency. Travelers from these countries were either barred from boarding flights to the US or detained at US airports after landing. These included students and teachers as well as businessmen, tourists and people visiting friends and family.
Many changes amid legal challenges
This order is often referred to as the “Muslim ban” or “travel ban”. Trump faced many legal challenges regarding this ban. In such a situation, there were frequent changes to it. In 2018, the Supreme Court approved it after several changes. This ban affected various categories of travelers and immigrants from Iran, Somalia, Yemen, Syria and Libya, as well as North Korean and some Venezuelan government officials and their families. Trump and others have defended the ban on national security grounds, arguing that it was intended to protect the country and was not based on anti-Muslim prejudice. However, the President had talked about a clear ban on Muslims during his first campaign for the White House.
