Drone Federation India (DFI) President Smit Shah targeted Rahul Gandhi and said that there are more than 400 companies in the country which currently manufacture different types of drones, ‘nothing will be gained by criticizing’

Rahul Gandhi Chinese Drone: Recently, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi flew a banned Chinese drone, regarding which he suggested that a strong production base is needed to make drones and not empty words. He is being heavily criticized on social media in this matter. Drone Federation India (DFI) President Smit Shah has targeted Rahul Gandhi.

He rejected Rahul Gandhi’s claims and said that there are more than 400 companies in the country which currently manufacture different types of drones. He said, ‘Not only this, more than 50 companies make drone parts, including batteries, propellers, flight controllers and motors. When so much is already happening in the country, it is very wrong to say that the Indian ecosystem has no understanding of making drone parts.’

‘Nothing will be gained by criticizing’

He further said, ‘This industry is still in its early stages and a lot remains to be done in it, but just criticizing without any concrete suggestion will not help. The collective efforts of industry players, academics and policy makers are truly remarkable.’ He also posted a video explaining why Rahul Gandhi’s comment was wrong.

In a separate tweet, the DFI chief also asked Rahul Gandhi several questions. He asked how he acquired it despite the ban on drones in the country and whether he has the remote pilot certificate required to fly a drone.

He posted, ‘His video raises serious concerns. DJI drones have been banned in India since 2022. How was this drone acquired? According to the Drone Rules 2021, all drones must be registered on Digital Sky. Was it? A remote pilot certificate is required to fly a drone. Did he have it? His residence and office are probably in the red zone. Did he take approval from MoCA/MHA before flying the drone? Do the rules not apply to him? Or does he just not care.’

‘Stop trying to bring down India’

Apart from Smit Shah, former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai also took a dig at Rahul Gandhi and asked him to stop his fake story to bring down India. He posted on Ekas, ‘Please check whether he is using an Indian drone or a Chinese made drone? Which brand is it? India today is the fifth largest industrial manufacturing country globally, second largest steel producer, second largest cement, third largest automobile producer, largest 2W manufacturer, second largest mobile phone producer, third largest electricity producer. All this has happened in the last 10 years. Please stop this fake story and trying to bring down India.’

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

He tweeted on Sunday (February 16, 2025), ‘Drones are not just a technology, they are bottom-up innovations produced from a strong industrial system. Unfortunately, PM Modi has failed to understand this. While he gives ‘teleprompter’ speeches on AI, our competitors are mastering new technologies. India needs a strong production base, not empty words.’

The Congress leader also claimed in the video that India does not make any of the components used inside drones and also has no understanding of optics.
