Hyderabad/Amravati: Heavy rains have been going on in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for the last two days. So far 10 people have died due to rain. At the same time, flood-like conditions have arisen at many places. Railway services have also been affected due to continuous rain. A South Central Railway official said that 99 trains were canceled and four trains were partially canceled due to heavy rains and waterlogging on the tracks at many places, while the route of 54 trains was changed.
PM Modi and Amit Shah spoke
PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. Also assured them of all possible help from the central government to deal with rain and floods. Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said that the loss of life and property has been reduced due to the precautionary measures taken on time. He said that despite these measures, nine people lost their lives in different rain-related incidents in different parts of the state. Three people are also feared to have been swept away in Mahabubabad and Khammam districts. The minister said that in other districts like Suryapet, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad and Khammam, the authorities have evacuated residents of several flood-affected villages to safer places.
CM Revanth Reddy holds review meeting
Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy held an emergency review meeting. Hyderabad also received heavy rains and several parts of the city were waterlogged due to overnight downpour. All schools have been declared a holiday on September 2 due to forecast of more heavy rains in Hyderabad district, officials said. District collectors have been asked to declare holiday in educational institutions on September 2 as per local conditions. Residents of an area in Khammam district are stranded on rooftops as large areas are inundated. The Meteorological Department has predicted very heavy to extremely heavy rains at isolated places in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Kamareddy and Mahbubnagar districts of Telangana till 8.30 am on Sunday, September 2. A ‘red alert’ has been issued for this forecast.
9 people have died in Andhra Pradesh so far
At the same time, rain is expected at many places in Andhra Pradesh and heavy rains may also occur at some places. An official release said that heavy rains are likely in parts of Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram, Parvatipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Kakinada and Nandyal districts. R. Kurmandha, Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, while alerting the people living in low-lying areas, said that a first level warning has been issued at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada due to the Krishna river being in spate, due to which heavy water is flowing. Andhra Pradesh has so far reported nine rain-related deaths and one person missing. The death toll in the state was eight a day earlier.
Vijayawada and Guntur towns submerged
At the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) in Tadepalli, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the state has received heavy rains. “Due to heavy rains, Vijayawada and Guntur towns are completely submerged. The Vijayawada-Guntur national highway at Kaza and the Vijayawada-Hyderabad national highway at Jaggaiyapeta are completely submerged,” Naidu said. CM Naidu gave information about the situation
The CM said that 94 other places in 14 districts received rainfall between seven to 12 cm. The Chief Minister said that nine people have died and one person is missing in rain-related incidents. According to the Chief Minister, flood water which was supposed to be diverted towards Kolleru lake was diverting towards Vijayawada and resulting in flooding in the city. Naidu said about the steps being taken to deal with the rain problem, “We are increasing security with sand bags and other means in the low-lying areas of Prakasam Barrage and have also alerted the District Collectors.” The Chief Minister said that 17,000 people affected by the rain have been shifted to 107 relief camps, while more than 1.1 lakh hectares of agricultural area and 7,360 hectares of horticulture area have been damaged. Naidu said that food is being arranged for the people in the rehabilitation centers.
26 NDRF teams deployed
26 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are being deployed for flood relief and rescue operations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Officials gave this information on Monday. They said that 12 teams are already deployed in both the neighboring states, while 14 more teams are being sent. Officials said that out of the 14 teams, eight are being sent by air from various places across the country. They said that the NDRF teams are equipped with various equipment.
