Earthquake: According to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration and global earthquake monitoring agencies, two tremors of different magnitudes were recorded on the island.

Taiwan was shaken by another earthquake, sending people into a panic. Strong tremors were felt across southeastern Taiwan to the capital Taipei on Wednesday (December 24, 2025). The 6.1 magnitude earthquake rattled tall buildings, causing people to flee their homes and offices for safety.

Two separate tremors
According to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration and global earthquake monitoring agencies, two separate tremors of varying intensity were recorded on the island. According to Reuters news agency, the first tremor was of magnitude 5.7, shaking buildings in and around the capital Taipei.

Shallow depth intensified the tremors
The epicenter of the first earthquake was just 10 kilometers below the surface. Due to the shallow depth, the tremors were felt very intensely. People reported that the ground and buildings shook continuously for several seconds.

Fresh memories of the devastating April 2024 earthquake
It is worth noting that Taiwan was previously hit by a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake in April 2024, which was the strongest in the last 25 years. The earthquake killed at least 17 people and caused widespread landslides and significant damage to buildings in the Hualien area.

The most devastating tremor since 1999
The April 2024 earthquake was considered the most severe in Taiwan since the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in 1999. The 1999 earthquake proved to be the deadliest natural disaster in the island’s history, causing extensive loss of life and property.
