A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Peru on Sunday, killing one person and injuring five others. Landslides occurred in and around the capital Lima and raised a cloud of dust and sand. The National Seismological Center said the quake struck shortly before noon on Sunday, with its epicenter about 30 kilometers from the port city of Callao, adjacent to Lima. The US Geological Survey measured the quake’s magnitude slightly lower at 5.6.
One person killed, five injured in earthquake
The National Police said the earthquake killed one person in Lima when a wall collapsed on his car. Footage broadcast by local channel Latina showed landslides were seen in several parts of the capital. Officials said no tsunami warning had been issued despite the strong tremors. President Dina Boluart urged residents to remain calm and assured people that there was no threat to the Pacific coastline.
Earthquakes keep happening in Peru
The Emergency Operations Center reported five people were injured in Lima. The earthquake also forced the postponement of a major football match being played in Lima. Peru is home to 34 million people and is located on the so-called Ring of Fire, a zone of intense seismic and volcanic activity around the Pacific Basin. Because of this, Peru experiences an average of at least 100 earthquakes each year.
The last major earthquake in Peru, in the Amazon region in 2021, had a magnitude of 7.5, injuring 12 people and destroying more than 70 homes. A devastating earthquake in Peru’s northern Ancash region in 1970 killed about 67,000 people.
