Earthquake tremors were felt in Ladakh at around 4 pm on Wednesday evening, causing panic among the people of the area for some time. However, due to the low intensity of the earthquake, there has been no loss of life or property. Earthquakes in a sensitive geographical area like Ladakh are not new. This area is located on the Himalayan tectonic plates, where mild and moderate earthquakes are often recorded.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said that the intensity of the earthquake was measured 4.3 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake is said to be 10 kilometers below the earth in the Leh-Ladakh region. At the same time, the earthquake was recorded at 4:23 pm.
What is the effect at what intensity?
An earthquake with an intensity of less than 5 on the Richter scale is generally considered mild. Every year about 6,000 such earthquakes occur, which mostly do not cause damage. However, it also depends on the geographical location and construction technology of the area. If the epicenter of the earthquake is on the banks of a river and the area has buildings without earthquake resistant technology, then even a tremor of 5 magnitude can cause serious damage.
Earthquakes with a magnitude of 2 or less on the Richter scale are very mild, which are difficult to feel. Such earthquakes are recorded more than 8,000 times a year. At the same time, earthquakes with a magnitude of 5 to 5.9 are placed in the moderate category. Such earthquakes are felt about 800 times every year, which can sometimes cause damage.
What to do and what not to do during an earthquake
If you are inside a building and feel the tremors of an earthquake, immediately sit on the ground or go under some strong furniture. Stay away from windows and heavy objects. If you are outside, stay away from trees, poles and electric wires, as there is a danger of them falling.
If you are driving a vehicle, stop the vehicle immediately and stay safe in it. On the other hand, if you get trapped under the debris after an earthquake, never light a matchstick or push any object. Doing so can cause more debris to fall. Instead of shouting if you are trapped under the debris, make a light sound on any object so that the rescue team can find you.
