Lok Sabha elections are going on across the country. The election campaign for the fifth phase of voting in 49 seats has stopped. Meanwhile, the Election Commission is keeping an eye on every activity. Now an important information has been given by the Commission.
Officials have recovered cash and drugs worth Rs 8,889 crore in different operations during the Lok Sabha elections. Officials said that this money and drugs were to be used to influence voters in the current Lok Sabha elections.
Large quantities of drugs seized
Among the items recovered by officials, the biggest share, i.e. 45 percent, is of drugs. Drugs worth about Rs 3,959 crore have been seized. The election officer said that drugs, alcohol, precious metals, freebies and cash influence elections at different levels.
Conspiracy to influence elections foiled
An official associated with this case said that drugs, alcohol, precious metals and cash are used to influence elections at different levels. He said that this time the Election Commission has emphasized on seizing narcotics. After studying the data, it has been found that the states through which narcotics were smuggled are now rapidly becoming centers of drug abuse.
Major operations by Gujarat ATS, NCB and Coast Guard
Three major seizures of narcotics have been made in joint operations by Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Indian Coast Guard. Drugs worth Rs 892 crore have been seized in just three days. Apart from this, cash worth Rs 849.15 crore, liquor worth Rs 814.85 crore, and narcotics worth Rs 3,958.85 crore and precious metals worth Rs 1,260.33 crore have been seized in all the operations so far.
