Electoral Bonds Scheme: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the electoral bonds scheme and farmers’ movement. He said that those who raised the slogan of not letting the country be sold are ready to sell every resource.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi wrote on social media X on Thursday (February 15, 2024), “Sell the airport cheaply, take electoral bonds.” Sell mines cheaply, take electoral bonds. Sell land cheaply, take electoral bonds.

He further said, “Narendra Modi, who gave the slogan ‘I will not let the country sell’, is ready to sell every resource of the country for election donations. But the farmer should not even ask for minimum support price on his crop, because the farmer does not give electoral bond. It’s a strange irony.

Actually, the Supreme Court canceled the electoral bond scheme. At the same time, farmers are standing on the borders of Punjab and Haryana with various demands including making a law to guarantee the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of crops.

What did the Supreme Court say?
CJI DY. A five-member Constitution bench headed by Chandrachud termed the 2018 electoral bond scheme as a ‘violation’ of the constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression and information. The court did not agree with the Centre’s argument that the objective of the scheme was to bring transparency in political donations and curb black money. The court has given this decision at a time when Lok Sabha elections are likely to be held in April-May.
