Electricity prices in Bihar may increase from April 1, 2026, with a potential rise of at least 35 paise per unit. Increases in rates for farmers, streetlights, and public drinking water are also being suggested.

People in Bihar may face a shock from expensive electricity bills. Consumers could be paying more for electricity from April 1, 2026. Electricity companies have submitted a proposal for higher, unsubsidized electricity rates to the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission. Under this proposal, the company has suggested increasing the current electricity rates for all categories, including domestic, non-domestic, rural areas, the poor, agriculture, and industrial sectors.

If the commission approves the proposal, consumers could face an increase of at least 35 paise per unit in their electricity bills. The government announces subsidies only after the commission’s decision, and consumers then pay the bill at the subsidized rate.

The electricity company has proposed a uniform rate for electricity used by those living below the poverty line and for domestic use in rural and urban areas. Currently, the unsubsidized rate for electricity under the Kutir Jyoti scheme and for domestic use in rural and urban areas is Rs 7.42 per unit, which has been proposed to be increased to Rs 7.77 per unit. The two existing slabs for urban domestic consumers have been merged into one. Consumers using more than 100 units will get electricity at a rate that is Rs 1.18 per unit cheaper.

Farmers will also face higher electricity costs.

The proposal also suggests that electricity for agriculture and streetlights may become more expensive. The current rate for streetlights is Rs 9.03 per unit, which has been proposed to be increased to Rs 9.38 per unit. Electricity for irrigation is also likely to become more expensive for farmers. Farmers currently pay Rs 6.74 per unit for irrigation. This is proposed to be increased to Rs 7.09 per unit. Farmers in urban areas currently pay Rs 7.17 per unit for irrigation, which is proposed to be increased to Rs 7.52 per unit. Public water supply currently receives electricity at Rs 9.72 per unit, which is proposed to be increased to Rs 10.07 per unit. Public opinion has also been sought.

The Bihar State Electricity Regulatory Commission has also sought public opinion on this matter. For the first time, the commission has requested feedback on the company’s proposal via email, registered post, and speed post. Members of the public can submit their opinions at the commission’s office in the capital on January 6th, in Begusarai on January 12th, in Gaya on January 19th, and at the Patna commission office on February 5th.
