Experts criticize Donald Trump’s increasing tariffs on India; China also buys the same amount of oil from Russia, yet Trump’s focus is only on India.

US President Donald Trump is constantly in the headlines for imposing tariffs on countries around the world. He has also imposed a 25 percent tariff on India, but he is not stopping here. He is trying to threaten India. He claims that India is buying oil in large quantities from Russia. Russia is using that money against the people of Ukraine. If this situation remains, America will impose more tariffs on India. However, China is also buying oil from Russia, but Trump is not opening his mouth about it at all. Experts have raised questions about Trump’s threats.

Speaking to news agency ANI, foreign affairs expert Robinder Sachdev raised the question as to why Trump is not putting as much pressure on China as India and he also said that China is also buying Russian oil to the same extent. He said, ‘Donald Trump is repeatedly mentioning India and its purchase of Russian oil and with increasing frequency this topic has come on his radar and is on his target, so it is very possible that Trump may impose sanctions on India.’

He said, ‘At present the tariff is 25 percent, which is very high, but the situation is the same with all the countries of the world, whether it is Japan, Switzerland or the European Union. All countries are facing this policy of Trump, so we will adjust with it, but the issue is that if America increases the tariff on buying Russian oil, then it can be anything. Trump can say 25 percent, 50 percent and even more.’

How much will India suffer due to Trump’s tariff?

Robinder Sachdev said, ‘If they are pressuring India, then why are they not pressuring China with the same strictness? We are not hearing anything from them about China. China is also buying Russian oil to the same extent… On a pure economic basis, if we are imposed a 25 per cent tariff, India will lose between $20-30 billion in exports.’

Ajay Srivastava, founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), said that China, not India, is the biggest buyer of Russian oil. In 2024, China imported $62.6 billion worth of Russian oil and India $52.7 billion, Trump is probably not willing to criticize China due to geopolitical calculations and is instead unnecessarily targeting India.

What is Trump threatening India?

In his latest statement on Monday, Trump threatened India, saying that the US would significantly increase the tariffs paid by India for buying large quantities of Russian oil. He said that most of the oil bought by India from Moscow is being sold in the open market at a huge profit. He does not care at all about how many people the Russian war machine is killing in Ukraine. Because of this, I will significantly increase the tariff paid by India to America.
