Chandrapur: The political turmoil following the mayoral election in Chandrapur Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra, continues to escalate. The BJP candidate won the mayoral post, but the support of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) is being cited as the reason behind this victory. Raj Thackeray’s MNS has termed this as “hoax politics” and has leveled serious allegations against the Uddhav Thackeray faction. The MNS claims that councillors from the Uddhav faction supported the BJP after receiving money from them.
“Money given to Shiv Sena UBT corporators”
MNS leader and spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande said, “I have received information from reliable sources that councillors who voted for the BJP were given Rs 1 crore each, along with other offers. In Chandrapur, councillors from the Uddhav Thackeray faction (UBT) were given Rs 1 crore, and independent councillors were given Rs 50 lakh. This is my information, and it should be investigated.”
Uddhav Thackeray’s faction vehemently rejected the allegations.
The Uddhav Thackeray faction hit back at the MNS, calling the allegations baseless. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said, “Raj Thackeray and I keep meeting, but Uddhavji has no role in the Chandrapur incident. This was a local-level decision. Those who have accused him of taking money—were they sitting there counting bags? Did they receive a commission? Whoever created the mess will have to answer, but stop blaming the Shiv Sena.”
Just last month, the two brothers were seen on the same stage.
It’s worth noting that just last month, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray were seen sharing a stage together. They also contested municipal elections together in several places, including Mumbai. This incident in Chandrapur has raised questions about whether all is well between the two brothers, or are internal differences brewing?
The BJP secured a majority in Chandrapur.
The Chandrapur Municipal Corporation has a total of 76 councillors. The BJP lacked a majority on its own, but with the support of some councillors from the Uddhav Thackeray faction, the BJP mayor was elected. The MNS claims this support was secured through a “money transaction,” while the Uddhav faction attributes it to “local political dynamics.” The two sides continue to exchange accusations. The MNS has demanded an investigation into the matter, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) is calling it a “political conspiracy.”
Will it impact Maharashtra’s politics?
It is believed that this political fire in Chandrapur could now impact Maharashtra’s politics. This incident may widen the distance between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, although they were seen together on a platform for a long time after the Shiv Sena split. Now, it remains to be seen how much this conflict escalates and what stance the two factions take on this matter.
