Former British Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss on Saturday advocated reforming Britain and fixing the system in the powerful bureaucracy and creating a movement like America, which led to major changes there. Referring to the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement of newly elected US President Donald Trump, she said, “To be honest, I think we need a British Trump. The question is who that person can be.”
Elizabeth Truss described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term as a ‘big achievement’. Truss also said during a dialogue at the HT Leadership Summit 2024 here that as the world’s largest democracy, India has to play a big role in the future of geopolitics. Truss was the Prime Minister of Britain for just 49 days in 2022. She was asked about the relationship between India and Britain amid changing geopolitical situations.
She said that I think the situation we are in right now is a very positive relationship. I really hope that we will be able to finalise the trade agreement. Britain and India can benefit greatly from each other in areas like technology, defence, agriculture. I think there is immense potential in this.
The world’s largest democracy
The former Prime Minister said that India is now the world’s largest country in terms of population and the world’s largest democracy. He said, it has to play a very big leadership role in the future and I think it is exceptionally encouraging. On the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, Truss said that it is a relationship of complete equality. He also said that both sides will have to make concessions to reach a trade agreement.
India’s role in Quad is important
He also stressed that India’s role in the Quad is very important in relation to the US, UK and Japan, especially as we are seeing, the threat of China is increasing. During the discussion, the former British Prime Minister took a critical view on the European economy and said that our continent is sinking. Citing the GDP per capita in Britain, he lamented that it is less than the US figure. Truss also said that there is a need to fix the system in the British bureaucracy and she would like to see the best reforms.
We need a British Trump
She said, ‘So I am interested in how we can give birth to a movement that is somewhat like the ‘MAGA’ movement or the tea-party movement in America, due to which we are seeing big changes (in America). To be honest, I think we need a British Trump. The question is who can be that person.
PM Modi’s third term is a big achievement
On the question of how she sees the third consecutive term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Truss termed it a ‘big achievement’. She said, I think Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term, being elected in the current environment is an incredible achievement. Every other incumbent government around the world has been thrown out of power. He said that this is going to happen in Australia, Britain and Canada too, this has happened with the Democrats in America, so ‘remaining in power is a big achievement and it is a proof of the economic reforms taking place in India and people feel that the country is moving in the right direction.
