The Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh has taken a firm stance in a serious corruption and national security case. Four senior officials of the Minority Welfare Department have been suspended with immediate effect for allegedly providing salary, medical leave, and voluntary retirement benefits (VRS) to Shamsul Huda Khan, a madrasa teacher from Azamgarh who was found to have illegal connections to Pakistan, despite being abroad for years.
The suspended officials include S.N. Pandey, Joint Director (JD), Minority Welfare Department; Sahitya Niksh Singh, former District Magistrate (DMO) Azamgarh (currently posted in Ghaziabad); Lalman, former District Magistrate (DMO) Azamgarh (currently posted in Bareilly); and Prabhat Kumar, former District Magistrate (DMO) Azamgarh (currently posted in Amethi). All officials have been posted to Lucknow and Jhansi during the suspension period.
What is the whole matter?
Shamsul Huda Khan was a teacher at the renowned madrasa Darul Uloom Ahle Sunnat Ashrafia Misbahul Uloom in Azamgarh. He had acquired British citizenship on December 19, 2013, but this fact was concealed through collusion between the madrasa management and departmental officials. Despite this, he continued to draw salary until July 31, 2017. Despite his absence, he was granted irregular medical leave. He continued to receive GPF, pension, and other retirement benefits even after taking VRS.
During this period, while in Britain, he traveled to Australia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka, and also visited Pakistan two or three times from the Gulf countries. The UP ATS investigation revealed Shamsul Huda Khan’s illegal connections with Pakistan, which further escalated the matter.
Actions So Far
Recovery orders of ₹16.59 lakh from teacher Shamsul Huda Khan have already been issued. Four officials have been brought under the scope of departmental investigation. Further action may be taken against more officials and employees.
