Paris: France’s Supreme Court ‘Court of Cassation’ has upheld the decision of the appeals court in which former President Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty of corruption while he was the head of state. The court said in a statement that the conviction and sentence are upheld. Sarkozy (69) has been sentenced to one year in prison. He has the right to demand to be kept under house arrest during which he will be put on an ‘electronic bracelet’. This happens in cases with a sentence of two years or less.
Former President of France from 2007 to 2012
Former President Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty in a corruption case by a Paris court in 2021 and an appeals court in 2023. He had tried to bribe a magistrate in exchange for information about the legal case in which he was involved. Sarkozy was the President of France from 2007 to 2012. This is the first time in France’s modern history that a former president has been convicted and sentenced to prison for actions committed during his term.
Sarkozy declares himself innocent
Nicolas Sarkozy said in a statement posted on the social media platform X, “I will fulfill my responsibilities and face all the consequences.” The former president said, “I have no intention of complaining. But I am not ready to accept the grave injustice done to me.” Sarkozy said he would try to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights. He again reiterated that he is innocent.
