Delhi News: The way has been cleared for the recruitment of health workers in government hospitals of Delhi. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has approved the immediate appointment of 1463 health workers including 701 nurses and 762 paramedical staff. Recruitment will be done on outsourcing through public sector undertakings like ICSIL, NICSI, BECIL, HIS. The Lieutenant Governor has taken the decision after the recommendations of the Dr. SK Sarin Committee constituted after the comments of the Delhi High Court on health services on February 13, 2024.
The High Court had directed the Delhi government to file a status report, pointing to the lack of health services infrastructure and beds in hospitals. The court had asked that issues related to coordination between the city’s population and health infrastructure, lack of human resources were raised. The court acknowledged that the provision of quality medical services is important for any health and well-being. It is the responsibility of the state to ensure a better public health system under Article 21 and Article 47 of the Constitution.
Restoration in Delhi’s government hospitals
The court said that without getting entangled in allegations and counter-allegations, there is a need for structural reforms in the functioning of government hospitals. The High Court had constituted a committee of experts. The committee constituted under the chairmanship of Dr. Sarin was entrusted with the task of taking care of and improving Delhi’s hospitals. The huge shortage of nursing and paramedical staff, a major obstacle in providing quality healthcare, was highlighted.

To address the serious issue, the Sarin Committee had recommended appointing outsourced agencies for immediate deployment of nurses and paramedical staff. The recruitment drive will work to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in Delhi and ensure the availability of quality medical services. VK Saxena’s approval will expedite the appointment process. It will help in reducing the burden on existing health workers and taking care of patients. Having adequate staff will also improve the healthcare of hospitals.
