Guwahati: The government of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has spent more than Rs 370 crore on advertisements in the last four financial years. Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika gave this information to the Assembly on Wednesday. Hazarika said that the government led by Sarbananda Sonowal, who was the Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021, had spent Rs 125.6 crore on advertisements in five financial years from 2016-17.
Himanta government spent 73 crores in the first year
Hazarika, in a written reply to Congress MLA Abdul Batin Khandakar, said that the current BJP government has spent a total of Rs 372.33 crore on advertisements in print, electronic and outdoor media during the last four financial years from 2021-22. Sharma took over as the Chief Minister of the second BJP-led government in May 2021. Hazarika said that in 2020-21, the Sonowal government had spent Rs 30.24 crore, while after forming the government for the second time, Sharma spent Rs 72.83 crore on advertisements the next year.
Increase in advertising expenditure every year
The assembly was informed that in the subsequent period, the Sharma government increased the advertising expenditure every year and spent Rs 78.85 crore in 2022-23, while Rs 160.92 crore in 2023-24. Hazarika said, however, in the financial year 2024-25, so far Rs 59.72 crore has been spent by the government on various types of advertisements.
The minister, in a separate reply to a question by independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, said that in the last financial year 2015-16 of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s rule, the Assam government had spent Rs 18.58 crore on advertisements.
