The report of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) related to the Gyanvapi Mosque states that the pillars of the mosque resemble those of a Hindu temple. It was also claimed that Devanagari, Kannada and Telugu inscriptions were found at 34 places. This shows that part of the temple itself has been used to build the mosque. Now All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi has criticized this ASI report, calling the organization a “handmaiden of Hindutva” and said that the report is based on mere conjecture and made fun of scientific studies. Is.
In a post on social media platform The report is based on conjecture and appears to make a mockery of scientific studies. As a great scholar once said ‘ASI is the handmaiden of Hindutva’.
839 page survey report
Earlier on Thursday, on behalf of Hindu side’s lawyer Vishnu Shankar Jain in the Gyanvapi Masjid-Kashi Vishwanath Temple case, it was claimed that ASI has found huge remains related to the Hindu temple inside the mosque. Minutes after the 839-page document was given to both Hindu and Muslim parties, Jain also made the report public, although the court had barred both sides from publicly disclosing details of the report.
The report said, “On the basis of scientific studies and surveys, architectural remains, artefacts, inscriptions, art and sculptures present there, it can be said that a Hindu temple existed here before the construction of the present structure. ”
Temple was demolished during Aurangzeb’s era – report
The report also states that the temple was destroyed during the reign of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. The report states that an Arabic-Persian inscription found inside a room mentions that the mosque was built during the 20th reign of Aurangzeb. The Hindu temple was demolished in the 17th century. It further states that pillars decorated with bells, niches for lamps and inscriptions from the temple were reused to build the mosque.
“On the basis of art and architecture, this pre-existing structure can be identified as a Hindu temple,” the ASI report said.
On the other hand, the Anjuman Intejamia Masjid Committee, which manages the Gyanvapi Masjid, says that it is yet to study the ASI report.
The Gyanvapi dispute is a decades-old matter, but in August 2021, five women filed a petition in a local court seeking the right to unhindered worship at the Maa Shringar Gauri site located inside the complex, which houses idols of Hindu deities.
11 people applied for the survey
After the district court passed a survey order in July last year to determine whether the mosque was built on a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple, the ASI surveyed the Gyanvapi mosque.
A total of 11 people, including both Hindu and Muslim parties, had applied to the court to obtain the survey report of the ASI on the Gyanvapi Masjid complex adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi. Earlier, Hindu side’s advocate Madan Mohan Yadav had told that Varanasi District Judge AK Vishvesh had ordered to provide the copy of the survey to the parties in the case.
The Hindu petitioners have been consistently claiming that the 17th century mosque was built over an already existing temple, following which the court ordered a survey. The ASI had submitted its survey report in a sealed envelope to the district court on December 18.
