Who is Ismail Haniyya?
Ismail Haniyya was born in 1962 in the Al-Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. He is a Palestinian leader. Ismail served as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority (PA) from 2006 to 2007. Hamas won a majority of seats in the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections. The government was dissolved after factional fighting with rival Fatah and an autonomous Hamas-led administration was established in the Gaza Strip. Haniyya has served as the leader of the de facto government in the Gaza Strip (2007–14). In 2017, he was elected as Hamas’ political bureau chief, replacing Khaled Meshaal.
