Today, Thursday is the last day of campaigning for the assembly elections in Haryana. All the major parties have intensified the election campaign. However, in the last phase of the election campaign, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a major setback as its candidate switched sides and joined the Congress. This is the second such setback to AAP in the last 10 days.
Ahead of the voting in the state on Saturday (October 5), Aam Aadmi Party candidate from the reserved Nilokheri assembly seat of Karnal district, Amar Singh, gave a shock to his party by joining the Congress on Wednesday. After joining the Congress, Amar Singh said that only the Congress can defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, which is constantly “doing injustice to women, farmers, Dalits and minorities.”
Alliance could not be made for the elections
In a statement issued by the party, it was told that Amar Singh joined the Congress in the presence of Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Pratap Singh Bajwa. Bajwa formally inducted Amar into the party.
The Aam Aadmi Party is part of the All India Alliance of opposition parties, but last month the Arvind Kejriwal-led party and the Congress could not form an alliance for the assembly elections and both the parties are contesting the elections on their own in Haryana.
This is the second setback for the AAP ahead of the elections
Kejriwal’s party had earlier suffered a setback in Haryana when its Faridabad candidate Parvesh Mehta quit the AAP and joined the ruling BJP on September 28 last month. Parvesh Mehta joined the party in Faridabad in the presence of Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar, who is the BJP MP from Faridabad, and Haryana BJP leader Vipul Goyal.
Meanwhile, welcoming Amar Singh, Bajwa said he has joined the party unconditionally and is “fully supporting Congress candidate (from Nilokheri) Dharampal Gondar.” Bajwa also mentioned that Amar Singh is quite popular among the Sikh community in Nilokheri.
Amar joined Congress to avoid division of votes: Amar
After joining the new party, Amar Singh said that Haryana is witnessing a direct contest between the Congress and the BJP. The situation is the same in Nilokheri. The main goal this time is to get rid of the BJP government, “which is doing injustice to farmers, women, Dalits and minorities and only the Congress can achieve this.”
Amar Singh said that if he had contested the election, it would have directly benefited the BJP. To ensure that the votes are not divided, he decided to join the Congress.
