Heavy rains wreak havoc in Pakistan’s Punjab province, 13 people died and more than 100 injured, the administration has started rescue operations and issued a helpline number.

The situation in Pakistan is currently bad due to heavy rains. Heavy rains in many areas of Punjab province have caused havoc. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), 13 people have died so far and more than 100 people have been injured due to sudden change in weather and rain. If the Meteorological Department is to be believed, there will be strong storms and rain in the coming few hours as well. Air traffic has also been badly affected due to bad weather. With this, a major accident has been averted.

PDMA Director General (DG) Irfan Ali Kathia has directed the Deputy Commissioners and rescue agencies of the entire province to remain alert amid reports of wind and rain in different districts of Punjab. All departments have been ordered to remain on alert to deal with emergency situations.

Helpline number released
After the rain in many areas of Pakistan’s Punjab province, the DM has also released a helpline number. The general public can call 1129 in any situation. Many roads are closed due to heavy rains. PDMA has appealed to the citizens to stay away from electric poles and hanging wires. There may be electric current in them. Do not stay in open places in case of storm and lightning. Along with this, it has also been advised to avoid travel.

Air traffic badly affected

A major accident was averted when a flight from Karachi to Lahore faced a severe storm as soon as it reached the runway. According to airport sources, flight FL 842 had reached Allama Iqbal International Airport and lost contact. The plane was damaged due to strong winds and turbulence while flying along the new runway. Air traffic control immediately instructed the pilot to abort landing and return to Karachi. Bad weather has affected more than 22 flights. Many flights have either been canceled or many are flying very late.

Heavy losses due to rain

PDM said that heavy rain and storm have caused damage in many districts. Electricity poles have fallen at many places. In view of this, relief and rescue work has been started. Along with this, the injured have been admitted to the hospital.

Alert issued in these districts
Pakistan Meteorological Department has said that wind and dust storm will continue today with the possibility of rain in Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Onkara, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha and Mianwali. It said that there will be rain in areas of South Punjab including Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar.
