‘I hide my face in world conferences due to the high number of road accidents’, said Gadkari in Lok Sabha

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari made a big statement on road accidents in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. He said that India’s record regarding road accidents is so bad that it has to hide its face in world conferences.

While answering supplementary questions during the Question Hour in the House, he said that despite all the efforts of his ministry, road accidents did not decrease, but increased.

Gadkari said that as long as society does not help, human behavior does not change and there is no fear of law, road accidents will not be curbed. The number of road accidents in the country is continuously increasing. Every year more than 1.7 lakh people die in such accidents. So many people do not die in war, nor do they die in Covid or riots.

’30 percent of people die due to not getting life saving treatment’

He said that when I go to world conferences, I hide my face. We have the dirtiest record of accidents. He asked the MPs to make efforts at their level to stop road accidents. Niti Aayog reports that 30 percent of road accident victims die due to not getting life saving treatment. Therefore, a cashless scheme has been introduced for treatment. This pilot project is being started in Uttar Pradesh, after which it will be implemented in the whole country.

Need to improve the system of issuing driving license

The Union Minister stressed the need to improve the system of issuing driving license in India. He said that the country in the world where driving license is easily available is India. We are improving it. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also asked the MPs to make efforts to prevent road accidents and work to awaken the society.

60% of those who die in accidents are in the 18-34 age group

Nitin Gadkari told the Lok Sabha that 1.78 lakh people die in road accidents every year in the country. Of these, 60% are in the 18-34 age group. Many people drive two-wheelers without helmets. Some people violate red lights. This is a strange situation.

Shocking figures given on road accidents

In response to supplementary questions, he said that Uttar Pradesh is at the forefront in deaths due to road accidents, while Delhi tops the list in terms of such deaths in cities. More than 23,000 people (13.7 percent of total deaths) lose their lives due to road accidents in Uttar Pradesh. More than 18,000 (10.6 percent) deaths occur in Tamil Nadu. In Maharashtra, this figure is more than 15,000 or nine percent of total deaths. More than 13,000 (eight percent) deaths occur in Madhya Pradesh. Among cities, Delhi leads with over 1,400 deaths, followed by Bengaluru with 915 deaths. Jaipur recorded 850 deaths due to road accidents.
