Brazil Police Raid on Rio Gang: At least 64 people have been killed during a police operation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Officials said that approximately 2,500 police and soldiers conducted a raid against a drug trafficking gang in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. 81 suspects were arrested during the raid.

Fire Breakout Between Police and Trafficking Gang
According to police, at least 64 people, including four policemen, were killed in the shootout between police and members of the drug trafficking gang during the raid. The government says the operation had been planned for more than a year and involved more than 2,500 security personnel.

Casualty May Rise
Police officials say the number of casualties may rise as the operation continues. According to a CNN report, authorities also seized at least 42 rifles during the operation. According to police, security forces surrounded several gang-controlled areas during the operation and upon entering, gunfire erupted. 64 people were killed in the firing.

Drone attack on police, UN expresses concern
Regarding this incident, the government stated that gang members allegedly used drones to target police in retaliation. The statement said, “Criminals used drones to attack police officers at the Penha Complex.” Meanwhile, the United Nations Human Rights Office has described the police raid on drug traffickers in Rio de Janeiro as horrific. The UN Human Rights Office said, “We are horrified by the Rio de Janeiro police operation, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 60 people.”

What did the Governor of Rio de Janeiro say?
Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro said, “We face a terrible challenge.” This is no ordinary crime; what began as a group of leftist prisoners has now evolved into an international gang involved in drug trafficking and extortion. The gang frequently clashes with rival factions and security forces.
