In view of the current situation in Manipur, curfew has been imposed in Imphal West and Imphal East. Also, internet has been shut down for two days in seven districts, Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur. Let us tell you, fresh protests have started in the valley districts against the killing of six people, whose bodies were recovered after allegedly being kidnapped in Jiribam.
At the same time, large-scale violence was reported in parts of Imphal valley districts. Police said that protesters vandalized the houses of three of the six MLAs, including Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s son-in-law, and set their properties on fire, while security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters in different parts of Imphal.
Protesters attacked the residences of ministers
An official said that the state ministers whose residences were attacked by protesters include Sapam Ranjan, L Susindro Singh and Y Khemchand. He said that curfew has been imposed indefinitely in Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching districts of Imphal Valley due to deteriorating law and order situation.
Protest after death of six people
In fact, protests were seen in Khwairamband Keithel of Imphal over the kidnapping and murder of six people – three women and three children. Sources said on Saturday that their bodies were found near a river in Jirimukh, a remote village in Jiribam district on the Manipur-Assam border on Friday evening. The bodies were brought to Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) in Assam on Friday night and kept in the morgue of the hospital for postmortem.
Three women and three children living in a relief camp went missing after a shootout between security forces and militants in Jiribam district last Monday. Meitei organizations alleged that the militants had kidnapped them.
Attack on a police station in Borobekra area
On November 11, a group of militants attacked a police station in Borobekra area but security forces foiled the attack, killing 11 militants. While retreating, the militants reportedly abducted three women and three children from a relief camp near the police station.
Ethnic violence between Kuki and Meitei communities
The state government had already declared a holiday in schools and colleges on Saturday. Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities for over a year and a half. Tensions have escalated recently with several incidents of violence. Ethnically diverse Jiribam, which had remained largely untouched by the clashes in the Imphal valley and surrounding hills, became a victim of violence in June after the mutilated body of a farmer was found in a field.
AFSPA imposed in six police station areas of Manipur
The Centre on Thursday re-imposed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas of Manipur, including Jiribam. The Union Home Ministry stressed that the decision was taken in view of the continued volatile situation due to the ongoing ethnic violence. Reacting to the issue, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in his X post urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the conflict-torn region and work in this direction.
Use of tear gas
David, a representative of Lamfel Sanakethel Development Authority, said that Sapam assured us that the issues related to the killing of people will be discussed in the cabinet meeting and the minister will tender his resignation if the government fails to respect the sentiments of the public.
Police said that the protesters also stormed the residence of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister L Susindro Singh in Khurai area of Imphal East district. Later in the evening, the mob also attempted to attack his residence, following which the security forces had to use tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Attack on Chief Minister’s son-in-law’s residence
Police said protesters also targeted the residence of Municipal Administration Housing Development Minister Y Khemchand in Singjamei area of Imphal West district. In Sagolband area of Imphal West district, protesters gathered in front of the residence of BJP MLA RK Imo, who is also the son-in-law of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, and raised slogans. He demanded appropriate action from the government and urged the authorities to arrest the culprits within 24 hours.
Vandalism at BJP MLA’s house
A senior police official said that the mob vandalised the BJP MLA’s house and set his property on fire. Another official said that protesters also attacked the residence of BJP MLA Sapam Kunjakesor in Tera in Imphal West and vandalised his properties. A vehicle parked outside the MLA’s residence was also set on fire.
Encounter with security forces
The police said the residence of another BJP MLA Joykishan Singh in Thangmeiband in the district was also vandalised. Protesters also gheraoed the residences of Janata Dal United (JDU) MLA from Wangkhei constituency T Arun and BJP MLA from Langthabal Karam Shyam. Meanwhile, the police said suspected militants had a brief encounter with security forces in Irengbam Maning area of Bishnupur district. They said there were no casualties in the incident.
Appeal to the Center to remove AFSPA
The Manipur government requested the Center to review and remove the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in areas falling under six police station areas of the state. The Center has re-implemented AFSPA in six police station areas of Manipur, including violence-affected Jiribam.
In a letter written to the Central Government by the Joint Secretary (Home), it was mentioned that the state government discussed this (re-implementation of AFSPA) in its meeting on November 15 and decided to recommend the Central Government to review it and declare the areas falling under six police station areas of the state as disturbed areas under Section 3 of AFSPA 1958.
According to the letter, it is therefore requested that the notification issued in public interest on November 14 be reviewed and withdrawn. On November 14, the Home Ministry had reimposed AFSPA in areas falling under Sekmai and Lamsang in Imphal West district, Lamlai in Imphal East, Moirang in Bishnupur, Limakhong in Kangpokpi and Jiribam in Jiribam district.
