In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a court sentenced Irshad, the accused in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl, to death. The court of Special Judge (POCSO), Vinod Kumar, also imposed a fine of ₹60,000 on the accused, who was found guilty of the crime. This verdict was delivered within a record ten months.
The incident occurred on December 24, 2024, when the eight-year-old daughter of a disabled auto driver living in Sujabad, under the Ramnagar police station area, left home at around 6:30 in the evening to buy mosquito repellent, but did not return home until late at night. When the family’s search for her failed, they informed the police.
The girl’s body was found in a sack
The next morning, on December 25, the girl’s body was found in a sack on the premises of a government school in Bahadurpur, causing a stir in the entire area. The police investigation revealed the name of the accused, Irshad, after examining CCTV footage in which he was seen taking the girl with him.
The investigation also revealed that the accused first conducted a recce of the girl, then lured her away, raped her, and to conceal the crime, killed her by crushing her head with a stone. He then stuffed the body in a sack and dumped it on the school campus. The post-mortem report confirmed the rape. While the police were searching for the accused, Irshad opened fire on the police team during a raid. In retaliation, he was shot in the leg and arrested.
Seven witnesses testified against the accused.
Charges were framed against the accused under sections 137(2), 65(2), 103(1), 238 of the IPC and sections 5M/6 of the POCSO Act. The charge sheet was submitted on January 7, 2025, while witness statements began on February 11, 2025. A total of seven witnesses were presented by the prosecution, and after the trial was completed, the court reserved its verdict for November 7, 2025. The accused was convicted on November 15, and on November 18, 2025, the court sentenced him to death.
