New Delhi: The CBI has filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court’s order in the Unnao rape case. This SLP, in the case of CBI vs. Kuldeep Singh Sengar, was filed in the Supreme Court on December 26, 2025. The SLP challenges the Delhi High Court’s order suspending the sentence of the accused, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, and granting him bail.
What is Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s sentence?
It is noteworthy that Kuldeep Singh Sengar was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25 lakh by the court in December 2019. He subsequently filed an appeal against this sentence in the Delhi High Court in January 2020, which is still pending. Meanwhile, in March 2022, Kuldeep Singh Sengar filed an application in the Delhi High Court seeking suspension of his sentence.
How did Kuldeep Singh Sengar get bail?
This application was strongly opposed by the CBI and the victim’s lawyers. Despite this, the Delhi High Court, on December 23, 2025, suspended the accused’s sentence until the disposal of the appeal and granted him bail with certain conditions.
CBI files SLP in Supreme Court
However, despite this, Kuldeep Singh Sengar is still in jail because he has also been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in another case by the CBI on murder charges. After studying the Delhi High Court’s order, the CBI filed an SLP in the Supreme Court on December 26, 2025.
What are the conditions for Sengar’s bail?
The Delhi High Court directed Kuldeep Singh Sengar not to go within a 5-kilometer radius of the victim’s house and not to threaten the victim or her mother. The court also stated that his bail would be automatically canceled if he violates these conditions.
