A strong earthquake struck western Turkey on Monday evening. One person has died in this earthquake. Its magnitude was measured 6.0 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Sındırgı, Balıkesir province.
The earthquake tremors were recorded at 7:53 pm local time (10:23 pm Indian time). Its depth was very low, i.e. about 10 to 11 kilometers, due to which strong tremors were felt in the entire area. Due to this people got panicked.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 51 kilometers south-east of Balikesir, 128 kilometers south-west of Bursa and 206 kilometers south-west of Istanbul. So far, news of the death of one person has come to the fore.
Statement of the Home Minister
The local administration has alerted the relief and rescue teams. Power supply and communication system are said to be normal in the affected areas, but precautionary inspection is going on. The administration has urged people to contact the authorities in case of any emergency.
Turkey’s Home Minister Ali Yerlikaya said in a statement on X that earthquake tremors were felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces. Yerlikaya said, “Due to the earthquake that was also felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces, AFAD and all related institutions have immediately started regional surveys. So far, no adverse situation has been reported. We are monitoring the situation moment by moment.” Turkey falls in a seismically active region, where earthquakes are felt from time to time. Even before this, moderate to strong intensity earthquakes have been recorded several times in the western and southern parts of the country.
