On 15 August 1947, India broke the shackles of slavery of hundreds of years and became independent. But India is not the only country in the world that celebrates its independence on 15 August, there are many countries in the world that became independent on this day. So let’s know about those countries which celebrate 15 August as Independence Day like India.
1. Republic of Congo
The Republic of Congo got independence from French rule on 15 August 1960. 15 August is celebrated as Congolese National Day in Congo. This country comes in the Central Africa region. In the 1880s, the French rulers enslaved Congo. After independence, Fulbert Ulu became the first president of the country and after about 3 years he had to step down due to the revolt of the workers. In 1963, the army took over the country by removing Ulu and an interim government was formed.
2. Korea
South Korea and North Korea became independent two years before India. Earlier Korea was under Japanese rule, it got independence on 15 August 1945. Now both countries celebrate National Liberation Day on 15 August.
Japan occupied the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945, the Eulsa Treaty of 1905 made it a protected area of Japan. 5 years later in 1910, Japan officially enslaved Korea. Korea got independence after about 35 years of struggle. It is alleged that during slavery, the Japanese looted Korea’s resources and banned the use of the Korean language.
About 3 years after independence, South Korea and North Korea became two separate nations, similar tension is seen between these two countries as between India and Pakistan.
3. Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein gained independence from German occupation on 15 August 1866. It is the smallest country in Europe and ranks sixth among the smallest countries in the world.
4. Bahrain
Bahrain gained independence from Britain on 15 August 1971. However, the British army started leaving Bahrain since the 1960s. Bahrain issued its first constitution in 1973. On September 21, 1971, Bahrain joined the United Nations as a full member. Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa became the first ruler of independent Bahrain and led the country until his death in 1999.
