India-Afghanistan: India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and the Acting Foreign Minister of the Interim Government of Afghanistan, Amir Khan Muttaki, had a phone conversation. This conversation took place on Thursday (May 15, 2025). This is the first conversation between the Foreign Minister of India and the Minister of the Interim Government of Afghanistan.

During this conversation, Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Muttaki condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The Indian Foreign Minister appreciated Muttaki’s move and wrote on X that “Muttaki strongly rejected the latest attempts to create distrust between India and Afghanistan on the basis of false and baseless reports, which I welcomed.”

Many meanings of Dr. Jaishankar’s conversation with the Afghan Acting Foreign Minister

This conversation is important because tensions between India and Pakistan continue and the distance between Afghanistan and Pakistan is increasing continuously. It is also worth noting here that India has not yet recognized the Taliban government of Afghanistan. But amid the changing equation, the conversation between the Foreign Minister of India and the Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan has many meanings.

Relations with Pakistan are sour, but Afghan citizens have cordial relations with India

The dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan is constantly increasing, whether it is the border dispute between the two or other issues. At the same time, India has always stood for the welfare of Afghan citizens, no matter what the circumstances. India has maintained cordial relations with the common people of Afghanistan. Before the Taliban came to power, India has made a big investment in Afghanistan, which includes big projects like roads, hospitals, electricity.

Earlier, talks were held between India and the interim government of Afghanistan in Dubai in January 2025. India’s Foreign Secretary and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister were present in this meeting. There have been some meetings in Kabul before this, but the information has not been made public.

Pakistan’s concern may increase seeing India-Afghanistan relations

But the way the government of Pakistan is seen standing against the Afghan people, there is a big dispute between the two countries on many issues. Amidst all this, this conversation shows that India’s strategy regarding this region can change. India has been continuously sending humanitarian aid so that the people there can get help, but this time this conversation can definitely increase Pakistan’s concern.

Now it remains to be seen what talks take place between India and the caretaker government of Afghanistan going forward and what is the result. But one thing is clear that Pakistan would not have liked this conversation.
