Convergence Foundation has released a report in collaboration with India Impact Sherpa. Its objective is to identify those organizations that have achieved significant changes by adopting system change.
The title of this report is ‘Systematic Impact Exemplars: Unique Approaches Toward Solving India’s Development Challenge’.
System Support Organizations (SSO) work closely with the government at the central and state levels. Through this, along with benefiting a large number of people, efforts are to be made to solve the problem arising due to system change. In India, the central and state governments are already spending a large amount of funds on social and economic development. According to Reserve Bank data, the total social expenditure of the central and state governments in 2022-23 was Rs 21.03 lakh crore. However, despite heavy investment by the Government of India, there is a great possibility of accelerating efforts towards achieving the goals of development.
To provide technical support to a large population, it is necessary that more system support organizations work with governments, with this report, The Convergence Foundation and India Impact Sherpa aim to present a workable framework that shows how system support organizations can work with governments to benefit people at a large scale.
The report details 20 major system support organizations in India. This report presents real world examples. This report also attempts to inspire other non-profit organizations and provide information related to this program. This report shows what can work in the Indian context.
At the report launch event, Vini Mahajan, Secretary, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, praised the work and contribution of the 20 organizations included in the report. She said that non-profit organizations have adopted a system change approach by working with governments. They can contribute to change at a large scale.
‘System change approach is a unique idea’
Ashish Dhawan, Founder and CEO of The Convergence Foundation, emphasized the importance of system change to tackle the country’s complex challenges. He said that the system change approach is a very unique idea, which has great potential to bring about change. He said that we have prepared this report to identify leading Indian organizations that have adopted system change to inspire other social purpose organizations and provide them with information so that it can be determined what can work in the Indian context.
Highlighting the importance of adequate financial resources to tackle difficult challenges, Hari Menon, Director of India Country Office of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said that system change driven by the government and supported by partners has the potential to bring long-term change, increase the efficiency of development programs and create a lasting impact on people’s lives. However, such change takes time to achieve.
