India has strongly reacted to Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif’s statement that the Taliban is waging a proxy war against Pakistan on India’s behalf. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in his weekly press briefing on Thursday (October 16, 2025), completely rejected Pakistan’s allegations, calling them absurd and baseless. Jaiswal said, “Pakistan is accustomed to blaming others for its internal failures. It has been Pakistan’s policy to harbor terrorism and use it as a political weapon.”
Randhir Jaiswal stated that India stands firmly in support of Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence. He explained that India is closely monitoring the ongoing conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan. “We are monitoring the situation. Afghanistan has the right to sovereignty over its territories. Pakistan should understand that not every problem can be solved by blaming others.” India’s statement comes at a time when a 48-hour ceasefire is in effect between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This ceasefire came after fierce border clashes and Pakistani airstrikes that killed dozens of soldiers and civilians.
Pakistan a haven for terrorism – Ministry of External Affairs
The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated its accusation of promoting terrorism in a statement. It said that Pakistan has been harboring terrorist organizations for years. It said that attacks on India and neighboring countries have been carried out repeatedly from its soil. Now that it itself is suffering from the scourge of terrorism, it is shifting the blame onto others, a long-standing strategy. India also stated that Pakistan’s interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs and the use of airstrikes there are detrimental to its interests. The attacks pose a threat to regional peace. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that India is committed to stability and cooperation in the region and opposes any form of violence.
Pakistan’s Allegation and India’s Response
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, in an interview with Geo TV on Wednesday, said that the Afghan Taliban is now fighting as a proxy against Pakistan on behalf of India. “Their decisions are being taken at Delhi’s behest.” He also stated that he doubted the sustainability of the 48-hour ceasefire, as Kabul has now become Delhi’s proxy. India called this statement diplomatically irresponsible and said that Pakistan should first take action against terrorist organizations operating on its soil rather than spreading lies.
New Warmth in India-Afghan Relations
Relations between India and Afghanistan have been gradually normalizing in recent months. Although India has not yet formally recognized the Taliban regime, it has begun re-establishing ties through humanitarian aid and development projects. Randhir Jaiswal said that India’s technical mission in Kabul is now being transferred to the embassy, and this process will be completed in the next few days. He added that India will continue to cooperate with the Afghan people in the areas of humanitarian assistance, education, and health.
