India-Pakistan Submarine: The Indian Navy is going to induct its third nuclear-powered submarine INS Aridaman by the end of this year. This step is being taken at a time when China and Pakistan are rapidly increasing their naval power in the Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy has already inducted two nuclear submarines like INS Arihant and INS Arighat.
China’s PLA Navy has now become the largest navy in the world and is investing heavily to increase its submarine power. China currently has 6 nuclear-powered submarines, 6 attack nuclear submarines, and 48 diesel submarines equipped with AIP technology. These submarines can stay in the water for several days and China plans to take the number of its submarines to 80 by the year 2035.
Modernization of Pakistani Navy
Pakistan is also rapidly modernizing its navy with the help of China and Turkey. Pakistan is inducting 30 ultra-modern warships and 8 Hangor class AIP submarines with the help of China. The trial of the first Hangor class submarine of the Pakistani Navy is already underway, which it hopes can change the balance of power in the Indian Ocean.
India’s nuclear submarine INS Aridaman
India’s third nuclear submarine INS Aridaman has been undergoing trials for the last 3 years, and it will be inducted into the Indian Navy by the end of this year. However, India’s first attack nuclear submarine will join the Navy by 2036 and the second by 2038.
India’s progress in AIP technology
India has recently inducted 6 Kalvari class conventional submarines, but these submarines lack AIP technology, due to which they cannot stay underwater for long. Now India is planning to induct 3 more Kalvari submarines from France and install AIP technology during refit. Apart from this, India is also in talks with Germany for 6 state-of-the-art AIP submarines.
