Indian Navy all set to launch its latest multi-role stealth guided missile frigate INS Tushil in Kaliningrad, Russia next week, ceremony to be presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as chief guest

The next week is going to be very special for the Indian Navy. The Navy is all set to launch its latest multi-role stealth guided missile frigate INS Tushil in Kaliningrad, Russia on Monday next week. The ceremony will be presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as the chief guest. Many high-ranking government and defence officials from Russia and India will be present on the occasion.

INS Tushil is an upgraded Krivak III class frigate of Project 1135.6, of which 6 are already in service, including 3 Talwar class ships, built at the Baltiysky Shipyard in St Petersburg, and the remaining 3 Teg class ships, built at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad.

INS Tushil is the seventh upgraded ship

INS Tushil, the seventh ship in the series, is the first of two upgraded additional follow-on ships, the contract for which was signed nearly six years ago in October 2016 between JSC Rosoboronexport, the Indian Navy and the Government of India. Under the aegis of the Indian Embassy in Moscow, an Indian team of experts from the Warship Monitoring Team stationed in Kaliningrad closely monitored the construction of the ship.

The warship is the result of the persistent and tireless efforts of hundreds of shipyard labourers as well as several Russian and Indian OEMs. After construction and preparation, the ship underwent extensive testing starting in January this year, including Factory Sea Trials, State Committee Trials and finally Delivery Acceptance Trials by a team of Indian experts.

What does Tushil mean?

These trials included testing of all Russian equipment installed on the ship, including the firing of weapons. During the trials, the ship achieved a speed of over 30 knots. With the successful completion of these trials, the ship will arrive in India in a combat-ready state and will be ready to show its effect right from the start.

The ship has been named Tushil which means ‘the protector shield’ and its crest represents ‘Abhedya Kavacham’ (impenetrable shield). With its motto ‘Nirbhay, Abhedya and Balsheel’, the ship symbolizes the Indian Navy’s unwavering commitment to protect and safeguard the country’s maritime borders.

How heavy and long is INS Tushil
This ship is 125 meters long, weighing 3900 tons. This ship is known for its deadly strike. It is a brilliant blend of Russian and Indian state-of-the-art technologies and best practices in warship construction. The new design of the ship gives it better stealth features and better stability features. In collaboration with Indian Naval experts and Severnoye Design Bureau, the indigenous content of the ship has been increased to 26% and the number of systems manufactured in India has more than doubled to 33. Key Indian OEMs involved include BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited, Keltron, Nova Integrated Systems from Tata, Elkem Marine, Johnson Controls India and many others.

Upon launch, INS Tushil will join the Indian Navy’s Sword Arm, Western Fleet under the Western Naval Command and will be among the most technologically upgraded frigates in the world. This new beginning will not only symbolise the growing capabilities of the Indian Navy but also the resilient collaborative strength of the India-Russia partnership.
