President of India Draupadi Murmu will visit Portugal and Slovakia. Draupadi Murmu will visit Portugal after 27 years. She will be on a state visit to Portugal on 7-8 April at the invitation of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), President Murmu will visit Slovakia in the second phase of the four-day tour. This will be her first such visit to Slovakia in 29 years. She will be on both these visits till 10 April.
India’s relations and engagement with Europe are already getting better. In this context, the visit becomes even more important. Just a few weeks ago, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the College of Commissioners visited India. At that time it was announced that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement would be finalized this year.
While talking to the media, Foreign Ministry Secretary Tanmay Lal called President Murmu’s meetings two important historical visits. He said the visit to Portugal is historic as it marks the celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Lisbon. President de Sousa visited India in 2020, while Prime Minister Antonio Costa came in 2019.
Indian President visited in 1988
In Portugal, President Murmu will meet Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and National Assembly (Parliament) Speaker Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco. She will hold bilateral meetings with Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Tanmay Lal said the President will also meet members of the Indian community in Portugal and interact with Indian researchers from different universities and academic institutions. He said then President K.R. Narayanan visited Portugal in 1998.
Slovak companies investing in India
Slovakia has 6,000 Indian expatriates and this will boost bilateral trade between the two countries, especially in the fields of automobile, engineering and IT. Officials said Slovak companies are also investing in steel manufacturing, IT hardware and defense sectors in India.
President Murmu will hold delegation-level talks with President Peter Pellegrini. She will meet Prime Minister Robert Fico. She will also address members of the Indian community. Officials said Slovakia provided significant assistance during the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine in 2022. India-Slovakia relations are also gaining importance in the broader India-EU partnership context.
