INDIAN RAILWAY: After Operation Sindoor, Railway Board found difference in the number of defence coaches between online and actual records, actual counting of defence wagons will be done across the country on 15th and 16th July.

New Delhi: During the exercise to ascertain the exact number of defence coaches after ‘Operation Sindoor’, the Railway Board found discrepancies between the data of the online coach management system and the actual recorded figures. It was then decided to count these coaches on July 15 and 16. Defence coaches are specially designed for transport of defence personnel, equipment and other supplies.

‘Millrail’ and ministry officials held a meeting

Officials said that about a fortnight after ‘Operation Sindoor’, ‘Millrail’ (a special branch of the Railway Ministry located at the Army Headquarters) and ministry officials held a meeting to ascertain the total number of defence coaches kept at various locations across the country. ‘Millrail’ is a special branch of the Indian Railways. In a circular issued by the Ministry of Railways to all zones on July 10, 2025, it was said, “In a meeting held with the Executive Director of ‘Millrail’ in Railway Board on 23.05.2025, it was found that there is a difference in the data available in IRFMM (Indian Railway Freight Maintenance Management) and the data available in the ‘Millrail’ office regarding the number of ‘Millrail’ coaches.”

What will be included in the calculation process?

The calculation will start on July 15, 2025 and should be completed by July 16, 2025. Elaborating on the calculation process, the ministry has said that this process will, among other things, include sick coaches standing on the roadside, repair lines or workshops, including other coaches which have not been presented for inspection for a long time. It said that this order is for a joint campaign to be run by the Operating and Carriage & Wagon Department in Indian Railways premises and by Millerail on Defense ‘sidings’ (separately designated tracks).

What is the objective of this campaign?

The objective is to locate, identify and update the information (including photos) of the coaches in the IRFMM application through a special module (Wagon Census) so that the record of active coaches can be corrected. The Ministry has requested all the Railway Divisions to form several joint teams to assist the concerned officials in this task.
