Sukabumi: Sudden floods and landslides have devastated hilly villages on Indonesia’s Java island. Ten people have died and two are missing after being hit by landslides, officials said on Monday. Lieutenant Colonel Yudi Hariyanto, head of the rescue command post in Sukabumi, said torrential rains over the past week have caused rivers to burst their banks, worsening the situation in more than 170 villages in Sukabumi district of West Java province, with a large number of trees falling.
Villages destroyed
Harianto said landslides, flash floods and strong winds devastated 172 villages and forced more than 3,000 people to take refuge in temporary government shelters. Officials have warned about 1,000 people to evacuate as more than 400 homes are at risk due to extremely challenging weather. The disaster also destroyed 31 bridges, 81 roads and crops on 539 hectares, while 1,170 houses were flooded to the roofs. The local disaster management agency said the bad weather also damaged more than 3,300 other houses and buildings.
Bodies of three children found
Rescue command post chief Lieutenant Hariyanto said rescue workers on Monday recovered 10 bodies from the worst-hit villages of Tegalbulud, Simpenan and Simas. The dead included three children. He said rescue workers were looking for two more villagers who are still missing.
