Islamabad: It has become more difficult for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to come out of jail. Imran Khan, who was acquitted in the illegal marriage case a day earlier, has been sent to jail along with his wife in another case. A Pakistani court on Sunday handed over jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to anti-corruption officials for eight days of custody for investigation of a new case of alleged corruption. The District and Sessions Court on Saturday dismissed the conviction of both of them in the un-Islamic marriage case, soon after which they were arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The brief order of this court also said that if both are not wanted in other cases, they should be released immediately. NAB, which registered a new Toshakhana case against the Khan couple, on Sunday presented both of them before Accountability Court Judge Mohammad Ali Waraich. The judge conducted the hearing inside Adiala Jail for tight security reasons. NAB Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon, who led the team that arrested the Khan couple, requested the court to send both of them to the custody of the bureau. After hearing the arguments of the lawyers, the court sent both of them to NAB custody for eight days.
Appearance will be on July 22
The court also ordered both of them to be produced on July 22. The period of detention can be extended to a maximum of 40 days on the request of NAB provided that it is required to do so for the investigation of the suspects. The new Toshakhana case is based on the allegation that the couple had violated the rules and purchased gifts from the government treasury during Khan’s government. This is the third Toshakhana case and Khan’s sentence in the previous two Toshakhana cases has been suspended by the Islamabad High Court.
