Tel Aviv: Israel has accepted Biden’s ceasefire proposal in Gaza. An aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel accepts Biden’s Gaza proposal but it is not a ‘good deal’. He said that despite this, the country accepts the Gaza war framework agreement proposed by the US. An aide to Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel has accepted the framework agreement proposed by US President Joe Biden to end the Gaza war.
However, PM Netanyahu has also described it as “flawed”. His aide said that more work needs to be done on it. Netanyahu’s chief foreign policy adviser Ofir Falk told a British newspaper that Biden’s proposal was “a deal we agree with, but it is not a good deal. But we want all the hostages to be released.” Falk said many details remain to be worked out, including “the release of hostages and the destruction of the genocidal terrorist organization Hamas”. Because there has been no change in them.
What is Biden’s proposal
The US President announced on May 31 that Israel has proposed a deal to Hamas that includes a “permanent end to hostilities” with an initial six-week ceasefire, a partial Israeli military withdrawal and the release of some hostages. According to Biden, the proposal “builds to a better ‘day’ in Gaza even if Hamas is not in power”. He said the deal is being negotiated through mediators. Biden’s proposal is in three phases.
First phase
The US President, while presenting the Gaza ceasefire proposal, said, “It is time to end the war. He said that we have also received a preliminary positive response from Hamas regarding the ceasefire. The first phase of the ceasefire will be six weeks. During this time, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners will be freed in exchange for the release of elderly and female Israeli hostages. Along with this, the Israeli army will withdraw from “all populated areas” of Gaza. Then Palestinian civilians can return to their homes. 600 trucks per day will deliver humanitarian aid to the devastated area of Gaza.
In this phase, Hamas and Israel will negotiate a permanent ceasefire. Biden has said that this ceasefire will continue as long as Hamas remains on its commitments (promise). If the talks take more than six weeks, the temporary ceasefire will continue.
Second and third phase of ceasefire
Biden said that in the second phase of the ceasefire, all remaining living Israeli hostages, including male soldiers, will be exchanged. At the same time, the Israeli army will withdraw from Gaza and a permanent ceasefire will begin. The third phase will include a major reconstruction plan for Gaza and the return of the “last remains” of the hostages to their families. Joe Biden is under tremendous pressure to stop the conflict in Gaza before the US presidential election. In such a situation, he said that now the time has come to end this war and start new days.
