Deir al-Balah: Israel has attacked the city of Rafah in Gaza, killing at least 16 Palestinians. The ‘Palestinian Civil Defense’ and the ‘Palestinian Red Crescent’ involved in humanitarian work have given this information. Locals said that fighting has intensified in the southern Gaza city. 1 million people have fled from Rafah since the start of the Israeli attack in May, most of whom have already been displaced due to the war between Israel and Hamas. These people are taking refuge in camps built in war-torn areas.
America warned
The US and other allies of Israel have warned against a full-fledged attack in Rafah. US President Joe Biden’s administration has said that doing so would be crossing the line. The International Court of Justice on Friday asked Israel to stop the attack on Rafah. However, it has no power to enforce its order. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to move forward, saying his military personnel will go to Rafah to eliminate Hamas and free those held hostage after the October 7 attack. The new attack has been carried out in the same area where an alleged Hamas compound was targeted on Sunday night.
45 people killed
According to local health officials, earlier an Israeli attack set a camp for displaced Palestinians on fire, killing at least 45 people. Anger was seen around the world over this. Netanyahu said a ‘tragic accident’ took place on Sunday while the army said it was investigating the matter. According to the Palestinian Civil Defense and the Palestinian Red Crescent, a total of 16 people were killed in the Tel al-Sultan area of northwest Rafah in attacks carried out at night. Israel says it is conducting a limited operation in eastern Rafah near the Gaza-Egypt border. But residents said western parts of Rafah were heavily bombed overnight.
‘It was a terrifying night’
“It was a terrifying night,” said Abdel Rahman Abu Ismail, a Gaza resident who has been sheltering in Tel al-Sultan since December. He said explosions could be heard from night to morning, with fighter jets and drones hovering over the area. Gaza’s health ministry said two medical facilities in Tel al-Sultan had to be closed because of the heavy bombardment in the area. Medical Aid for Palestinians said the Tel al-Sultan medical centre and the Indonesian field hospital were closed, with health workers, patients and displaced people trapped inside.
